What Is Nurses Week?

Nurses week begins on Nurses Day (6th of May)  and ends on Florence Nightingale’s birthday and International Nurses Day (12th of May), with support from the ANA (American Nurses Association) to recognize the  essential work nurses do.

It’s also an opportunity to educate the general public on the major contributions by nurses to healthcare and society.

Each Nurses Week has a healthcare theme – 2020’s theme was “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Nursing the World to Health” which highlighted a wide range of nursing issues and nursing leadership.

History Of Nurses Week

Though a request was made in 1953 to President Dwight D. Eisenhower by Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the US Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare, Nurses Week wasn’t officially enacted until 1974.

Since then, Nurses Week has been observed the week of May 6 – 12.
